underneath it flickers

lau persijn, Belgium, 2024, 19’

The jay, the train, the moss, the trembling soil. How to listen to a space considered empty? underneath it flickers suggests different perspectives on La Friche Josaphat, a verdant fallow land in Brussels threatened by real estate development. By questioning our ways of looking and listening, the film seeks to connect with the land as a single body inhabited by many creatures.

“By focusing on the cinematic interpretation of La Friche, without losing sight of the specific urban environment, underneath it flickers becomes something universal. The filmmakers add a courageous chapter to the book of anthropocene cinema and make a powerful statement to the political world,” Jannes Callens writes.

Nature’s Whispers

lau persijn’s underneath it flickers (2024)

Jannes Callens
11.10.2026

Between Schaarbeek and Evere lies La Friche Josaphat, a unique 24-hectare green space. It was once a marshalling yard for splitting and assembling freight trains. Today, it is one of Brussels’ last refuges for biodiversity. Rare fauna and flora are constantly threatened by property developers in an increasingly urban landscape. Countless petitions and citizens’ initiatives advocate for the preservation of La Friche as Brussels’ equivalent of The Zwin Natural Park. With underneath it flickers, filmmaker lau persijn (they/them) champions the site’s appeal and ecological importance.

Un Chien Andalou

Luis Buñuel, France, 1929, 21’

Spanish surrealist Luis Buñuel wrote his first feat together with Salvador Dalí, based on their dreams. Don’t get stuck on the plot. Buñuel deliberately omits chronology and opts for Freudian dream logic, in which scenes do not necessarily follow one another logically.

Downside Up

Tony Hill, United Kingdom, 1984, 18’

With a single camera movement, this film explores humankind’s relationship to the ground. The viewpoint continuously changes. Places, objects, people, and events come in and out of focus. These observations gradually speed up and reveal a double-sided ground, flipping like a tossed coin, which then slows again to oscillate around the Earth’s edge.

The Hymns of Muscovy

Dimitri Venkov, Russia, 2018, 14’

The Hymns of Muscovy is a trip to the eponymous planet, which is an upside-down space twin of the city of Moscow. Gliding along its surface, we look down at the sky and see historic architectural styles fly by—the exuberant Socialist Classicism, aka the Stalinist Empire, the laconic and brutalist Soviet Modernism, and the hodgepodge of their contemporary knock-offs and revivals.
