Cinema Fouad

Mohamed Soueid, Lebanon, 1993, 41’

Cinema Fouad is a portrait of Khaled El Kurdi, a young Syrian trans woman living in Beirut. The documentary follows her journey from soldier to cabaret dancer in an effort to raise funds for her gender affirming surgery. Filmmaker Mohamed Soueid shows scenes of El Kurdi’s domestic world, eating, applying make-up, and dancing in her bedroom, while she reflects on her dreams, longings, and experiences.

Gentle and compassionate, Cinema Fouad weaves a complex, multi-layered story of sexuality, identity, and desire. This compelling portrait also introduces the viewer to the rarely seen underworld of 1990s Beirut.

In Conversation: Manon de Boer and Mohamed Soueid

Savina Petkova
30.10.2026

In a double-bill constellation curated by Matti Ullrich, two extraordinary women get to meet who otherwise would have never crossed paths: Dutch actress Sylvia Kristel, best known for portraying Emmanuelle in the erotic film series phenomenon of the 1970s, and the Syrian trans woman Khaled El Kurdi, who’s been a fighter during the 1970s-1980s Lebanese war and a cabaret dancer. They have one thing in common: authenticity. yanco invited filmmakers Manon de Boer and Mohamed Soueid to discuss each other’s films and to reflect on their own work in turn, because of their shared understanding of humans as mosaics of wonder and vulnerability.
