This is the story of Copa-Loca. Paulina is the girl at the heart of this abandoned Greek summer resort. Everyone cares for her and she cares about everyone – in every possible way.

Bio Christos Massalas

Christos Massalas (Greece, 1986) studied at London Film School (LFS) and Kingston University. His short films were screened in over two hundred international film festivals, including Cannes, New Directors/New Films, BFI and AFI Fest, and have received numerous awards. In 2016, he was selected for the Filmmakers Academy at the 69th Locarno Film Festival. His short Copa-Loca won the Greek Academy Award and was nominated for the European Film Award.

In an abandoned Greek summer resort, we follow the mundane life of Paulina. Between memorizing the list of cocktails that were available at the resort, challenging the locals with impossible dilemmas, and engaging in sexual intercourse with literally almost everyone, she tries to maintain the warm spirit of a never-ending summer in any way possible. In his film, Christos Massalas depicts a floating moment in time through a photogenic and pictorial approach. The cinematography with a pastel colour palette, dynamic sound design, and omniscient narrator creates a dreamlike ambiance. Copa-Loca is blissfully melancholic and digests a bittersweet feeling of belonging in a forsaken place.

Swollen Stigma

Sarah Pucill, United Kingdom, 1998, 21’

Swollen Stigma is a visual, surrealistic narrative about a woman travelling both literally and psychically through several rooms. Memories, or fantasies, of another woman, fill her imagination. The film proposes lesbian imagery, and its shifting points of view jump between the protagonist, fantasy spaces, and her lover, making an internal world leak into what is external.
