Barbara Hammer takes out her camera to film audiences at screenings of her films—some women-only, some mixed. She wanted everyone to speak for themselves. She wanted to show the diversity in a women’s audience: the sophistication, the thoughtfulness, the fun-loving spirit, the flirtations, the detailed, the subtle. She wanted her audience to make their own film.
In a time of national borders and increasing geographic chauvinism, she found images of women transcending boundaries and cultures, while also acting as spokespeople for cultural difference.
Bio Barbara Hammer
Barbara Hammer (1939-2019) was an American feminist filmmaker, visual artist, and lesbian activist with a career spanning over fifty years—constructing revelations on gender and sexuality, and later illness and mortality. She produced over ninety films, ranging from experimental shorts to essays and full-length documentaries, as well as performances, installations, and photographs that illuminate the representation of lesbian lives. In her work, Hammer explodes traditional notions of female sexuality by showing it for what it is: complex, messy, human.
