double bill #23

The films in this double-bill trace the fragile space where imagination pushes against the limits of circumstance. Some futures feel close enough to touch, yet remain suspended just beyond reach.

In Ours is a Country of Words, families in the Shatila camp prepare for a long-awaited return to Palestine—an event set in an unspecified future. Mathijs Poppe films with tenderness, revealing how the dream of home is both sustaining and painfully distant, shaping daily life.

The White Elephant turns to adolescence in 1990s Palestine, pieced together from Israeli images found online. Shuruq Harb’s collage is sharp, sometimes darkly funny, its fragments capturing the uneasy overlap of occupation and self-discovery as a teenager navigates pop culture and political tension

Together, these films explore how identity forms in the gap between the world as it is and the world as it is imagined.
