double bill #12

Where does hope come from? In both This Day Won’t Last and Scum Mutation, we learn that it emerges from persistence. Mouaad el Salem’s video diary captures queer life in Tunisia with a quiet urgency. Glimpses of intimacy—a gesture, a glance, a confession—are recorded as though to shield them from erasure. By contrast, Scum Mutation confronts us with the body at its most exposed: scarred and mutated, breaking down and remaking itself.

Where one film whispers, the other screams, yet both insist on presence. Simply existing and filming this are acts of defiance. Together, the films demonstrate that resistance is not about waiting for a brighter future, but about insisting on life now. Even in decay, there is motion, survival, life. Through the stubbornness of living and recording, hope is born.
